Thai Boba Milk Tea – Plumes Coffee & Tea

On September 27th, I went to a local cafe to study with friends! Plumes seems to be a default place for students around here to study, with table space, decently priced food and drink offerings, and chill atmosphere. They also offer a student discount on drinks! I’ve been hesitant to try the boba around the downtown Monterey area, as the one that I had from a boba shop wasn’t amazing, reviews for another aren’t either, and the other places that have boba are Asian restaurants or Western cafes. Including Plumes. I decided to try it out since eventually I will feel the need to have an opinion on all the boba in the area, and I actually hadn’t had any boba since moving in for graduate school (for various reasons, catching up on posts, the not-so-great options, etc). Hence the date gap between this and the last one, ha!

You can’t possibly go wrong with a thai tea, so I figured that’d be the safest option. I did ask about sugar and ice level, and surprisingly they had options for adjustments. No real expectations, but am trying to be hopeful. Highly skeptical though.

It was quite interesting…I say hard to get thai tea wrong, but the drink tasted like it was trying to be thai tea, but wasn’t quite there. It was an attempt at thai tea, but the finishing flavor profile was so close yet so far. The biggest surprise was the boba. It was pretty good for a generic Western cafe, chewy not much flavor, but honestly, was much better than the drink. I’d attempt some of their other options and pair it with boba just to see how the consistency and other drink quality are. If I go back for more study sessions.
