Mango Pomelo Sago (楊枝甘露) – Tarami

The other day I entered a 7/11 and this pineapple jelly dessert caught my eye: with the big black balls on the cover, I couldn’t help but be drawn to a boba dessert. No matter how it is, I had to get it!

Turns out, the kanji characters on the lid was the name for the Hong Kong mango pomelo sago dessert. While it typically has mango, pomelo, small tapioca pearls, and some kind of cream, supposedly this is a jelly rendition of it with boba? Right off the bat there is a disclaimer that it’s konjac boba, so it’s not real boba to get your hopes up. The jelly itself also contains mango and pineapple pieces.

As a mango pomelo sago, it fails spectacularly. However, if you just told me it was a tropical jelly, it’s not bad. The jelly holds together well, but is soft once you scoop and bite into it. The mango is quite soft, but decently sweet, and a pineapple reminiscent of the canned one. The boba is obviously not real boba, and is essentially just another jelly component. That’s fine, to be expected.
