Tonight my family went to go eat Japanese food at the big Mitsuwa Market in Costa Mesa. It’s been a while since I last went, and it’s really gotten a huge makeover. This included the new boba spot, Umacha!
It seems like all of their normal milk teas are made from a dairy-free soy powder. While I’m sure they’ll end up tasting fine, there was no real milk option except brown sugar boba milks or the matcha lattes. I went for a matcha them, since they also claim to use ceremonial grade. To spice things up, I got the one with added strawberry. I usually do half sugar, but I went with a quarter because the boba would have brown sugar anyway.
The drink was fine overall. I‘m not sure if it was because I got less sugar, but there was kind of a lack of flavor. The matcha was ok, but tasted like the everyday matcha stuff at any cafe. The strawberry jam wasn’t properly mixed in (my bad), so I had a bunch of strawberry preserves at the beginning in a few sips. The boba was a bit on the stiff side, but not horrible. My mom really liked her boba though and said hers was warm.
