A bit ago on my recent Taiwan trip, on August 11th, we made a day trip exploring some parts of Taichung. Speficially, we spent some time in Shen Ji Cultural Village, a small collection of vendors selling their handmade wares, some souvenir shops, and some cafes. One of these cafes is A Bite of Frozen, a place specializing in drinks and douhua, a Chinese tofu pudding. It was really hot, and we needed a treat and a place to rest, so we stopped by to try some douhua. Ours had boba in it, so it’s going on the boba blog.
We went for the simplest one on the menu, which came with tofu pudding, mung bean, boba, and ice. The other options were bit more complicated with extra toppings, and we felt like we didn’t need those.
It was pretty good! I haven’t had a douhua in a while, and though I thought it would be sweeter, the tofu pudding was literally just soft tofu, without much syrup. I think any sweetness would have come from the boba, which was perfectly chewy, with some of the flavor of the mung bean, balancing out the whole dish. The ice was wonderful, but unfortunately, we were outside, so it instantly turned into a cold soup.
