Brown Sugar Milk Black Tea (こがし黒糖ミルクティ) – Natural Candy

Today I hung out in Hirosaki to get some apples and do some sightseeing! Beforehand, I did some research to see if there was any boba in town, and it turns out there is one shop that claims to be a boba specialty spot (it’s also a chicken bento spot under a different name?). At the end of my day doing everything I wanted to do in Hirosaki, I stopped by for a drink, supposed to be for the train back to Aomori.

They had an interesting variety of drinks available for boba, but I was down to choosing between either the matcha milk or the brown sugar milk tea. What was weird was that only the options for brown sugar came with Chinese names…my reasoning for the matcha was that I got a milk tea yesterday, but I had some hope that perhaps their milk tea was good?

I didn’t see the entirety of them preparing the drink, but I did hear some microwave sounds, and saw some carrying action from one end of the kitchen to the other. At the end, ice was added. The drink not only came with a heart shaped lid, but also whipped cream on top with what looked like a brûlée.

The first sip of the drink was very weird. The taste was like a kind of sweetness I couldn’t quite pinpoint, almost caramel-y, yet not quite at the same time. There’s barely any tea flavor, and the drink eventually started to taste like sweet whipped cream. Not the usual sweet milk, but like extra sweetness was added on top of already sweetened cream.

I thought I mixed the drink up, but apparently not enough. All I got at the end was the thick whipped cream topping, burnt sugar flavor, and boba.

Speaking of, the boba was chewy, but I had the opposite problem from yesterday. It was chewy yes but simultaneously too soft chewy.

Don’t think I need to go back, but I don’t regret trying. I only regret getting this drink and not the matcha. Good thing I only got a medium.
