Today was just a chill day at home. My mom was talking about the famous Chi Cha San Chen, so my dad and I were going to drive to Rowland Heights so I could go try it, but various factors led us to being ready pretty late in the afternoon, and at that point, it seemed like more of a trek than it was worth. I thought about finally trying Bopomofo in Artesia, but that’s also decently far too. Then I thought of Bako Tea House in Santa Ana, which I thought would be far, but relatively, is much closer! I found out about Bako from a YouTube video on the best boba in Orange County, and have been wanting to try it since then. Plus, there was this dumpling place across the street that I wanted to try, so it all worked out in the end.
They have a good selection of milk teas, but I went with the phoenix oolong because it’s on the unique side. I feel like “phoenix” tea is getting popular now, starting with Orobae, or maybe it’s my imagination. As a tea connoisseur, my mom has never heard of it, but she’s been a recent fan of it in boba drinks now.
The drink is really good! It’s just a bit toasty, but very oolong-y, and the perfect sweetness that isn’t too sweet and can really taste the tea flavor without being bitter. The milk flavor is also pretty apparent. One thing I did see on their online order system (that we didn’t use), is that you can ask for more tea than milk, or vice versa, which I found interesting! As for the boba, it had a very good chew to it, and had a bit sweet coating to it. Definitely would go again!
