A couple boba eats: a wheel cake and shaved ice

Surprisingly, I did not get a drink today (though I did get a cup of winter melon tea at the night market I went to, does that count? No boba in it, but I get winter melon at boba places). Instead, I did drop by two places that featured boba in the menu items I got.

The first is a baked pastry. Its kind of like a street waffle style (I think it’s called a wheel cake in English), and typically it’s filled with a custard cream. The one I ordered had cream and boba in it. It was a nice treat, and I got one hot and fresh. Overall, it was a pretty standard wheel cake on the outisde, just a bit crispy, and fluffy on the inside. I’d say it was pretty good, and I appreciated the fresh, nice crisp and soft pastry, even on a hot day like this. The cream was fine, a bit chunky, and the boba was a typical boba texture, but just inside of the waffle thing. There was a good amount of boba. As expected of boba in Taiwan, it was nice and chewy, and just a bit sticky on the inside as filling.

The next was a shaved ice. I stopped by a Taiwanese shaved ice place, and ordered their boba milk tea shaved ice. Oh man, Taiwan shaved ice just hits different; it was soft, fluffy, and milky but light. The ice was in thin sheets that somewhat melted together, yet held their shape at the same time, so it was kind of easier to eat it in sheet rather than take a random scoop out of the side. There was a proper nice milk tea flavor to the ice itself, and I would scoop some boba onto the ice from time to time to combine them (I didn’t end up using the condensed milk, but it came in a cute tiny pitcher!). The boba here was also fantastic, and steeped in some sugar syrup which went perfectly with the ice. One thing I’d like to complain about, is the weirdly shaped container the boba came in, but that has nothing to do with taste so I digress…
