Tapioca Milk Tea (タピオカミルクティー) – Family Mart

Up next on bad (or should I say, fake) is the boba from Family Mart, one of Japan’s biggest convenience store chains. I spotted this gem on one of my first trips to my local Family Mart, and eventually picked this up to try. And now I’m having it today.

Family Mart only offers this one as a standard milk tea drink, but that’s already pretty good in my opinion. Although Lawson has 2 boba options (to come later…), Seven Eleven doesn’t have any, completing the major chains, and Seicomart (the Hokkaido specialty chain) carries the same one as I found in my grocery store and tried a bit ago.

I’m not entirely sure why, but I was surprised that this tastes exactly like that grocery store one. The tea, again, is that now classic Japanese black tea flavor. Pretty good in terms of tea flavor and a decent sweetness for a bottled drink. The drink itself is not bad. Boba tastes and feels exactly like the other one too. It has that in between texture of real vs hard boba. Not as soft as a jelly, but like a soft, hard jelly I guess. Definitely not a substitute for real boba, but still, an interesting experience, and I don’t entirely hate it.
