Matcha Oolong Milk Tea – Sunright Tea Studio

After the Sunright fail on Tuesday, we’ve been talking about trying to get Sunright again the past couple of days…I don’t entirely care about getting the limited edition Lunar New Year cup, but it is a great excuse to get Sunright…and makes a great post-class drink for today.

Sunright is probably one of my favorite boba places near home, their drinks and boba are pretty quality, and overall they’re really consistent with great drink choices too. Looking back on the boba logs…Oh my gosh, I haven’t had Sunright since last May? Seriously? Very sad news…but finally breaking the streak…

Alright, so today I will finally try out their Matcha Oolong milk tea, which combines, you guessed it, matcha and oolong in one drink. It sounded good, and plus, I know I’ve said I would save the strawberry matcha for Sunright since they claim it to be one of their specialties…but apparently you can’t adjust sugar or ice, which is kind of a drawback personally. Oh well, some other time and place. I was also deciding between honey boba and brown sugar boba, since at Sunright there’s the option of both. At first, I was going to do the honey for the light aesthetic and lighter flavor, but went with brown sugar for deeper flavor since sometimes the honey boba can be a little lacking. I do hope that the matcha and oolong teas complement each other, and that you can taste both but the flavors don’t clash with each other…Does this also mean it’s double the caffeine? Maybe, but I could use the energy for midterm season, huzzah for that.

So since the drink came home (pick up courtesy of my dad) already relatively mixed up I imagined, I just shook it up anyway because there wasn’t much of a point in trying the layers anymore. Though I will say, there were some pockets near the boba at the bottom of the drink that were regular milk tea colored and not matcha green, which was a pretty interesting sight. To my pleasant surprise, within the first few sips, I could taste both distinctly but the flavors also did not clash with each other. I do think the matcha is the more powerful flavor here, but I do get to taste the oolong in there as well, which is quite nice. I will say from time to time I get some matcha clumps, but it’s not too bitter at least. The drink is creamy but not heavy, and I can taste both teas in there. Boba is great, very chewy, and has a distinct brown sugar toastiness to it.

So that’s it for the milk teas on the list for now, and I don’t have to feel bad about repeating if I ever feel like it… Eventually I will try at least one cheese foam drink, and I need to get to their frosties, though that’s certainly a more summer choice.
