Sunmerry recently came out with boba egg tarts, and more recently made them available at all California locations. Naturally, I had to try them out, since we got 7 Leaves yesterday, and Sunmerry is located in the same plaza.
The tart is composed of a flaky crust, a milk tea egg custard base (under the boba), boba in brown sugar syrup on top, and a chocolate straw cookie(do these have a name?) on top. Apparently they scoop on the boba fresh onto the egg tart, which I found interesting but also smart so the tart wouldn’t get too soggy (is the theory I have). I’m not a huge fan of the normal egg tart, but this is boba themed and not straight up egg custard either so I was so down to try these.
The tart overall is a nice treat, but probably not something to get too often. The crust was still a little flaky but a little soggy, and probably would be best fresh. I think the custard complimented all the flavors nicely, but didn’t have a super stand-out flavor. The boba was nice boba, super chewy and just the right amount of sweetness, and you can tell the boba itself was fresh. It was also oozing brown sugar syrup too. While I liked the amount of boba there was, it did feel a little disproportionate to the tart. I’m not saying there should be less boba, but maybe a little more custard? The straw cookie was a nice. aesthetic touch but by the time I actually had it, it was super soggy and not crunchy at all, which I found unfortunate. A little crunch, either from the crust or the cookie would be a nice texture contrast!
