Yes I had boba yesterday. Doesn’t mean I can’t have one today…
So yesterday I was mulling over boba after having 7 Leaves, and I realized yesterday would have been the perfect opportunity to try out Yoyo Tea Shoppe (post coming soon!), a new place that opened about a month ago. I thought to myself, oh well, maybe next week.
Little did I know that my parents would stop by Yoyo on their daily drive today! I had a little hard time deciding what I wanted on a short notice, even with the small menu, but after doing a little Yelp sleuthing and wanting a milk tea after yesterday, I went for the Brûlée Yoyo. While the names on the menu are cute, they aren’t very descriptive for the stuff I think is actually in the drink, which required some Instagram sleuthing for the insides. The website is also…not helpful ha!
At first, I was a little sad the top wasn’t as pretty as the one on their Instagram, with the burnt brûlée sugar on top (is this Expectations vs Reality?), but I ended up sucking up the sugar pieces while I was drinking. I was also the only one in my family that got a cream topping, so mine had the plastic lid meant for drinking foam on it instead of the sealed lid. I found it a bit odd because when I’ve seen these types of caps before usually the mouth-piece(?) lid(?) (terminology??) is connected via a plastic strip to the rest of the cap, but this one is a separate piece. Maybe it saves that bit of plastic. Or I’m just inexperienced and haven’t seen this type before.
Before I stuck the straw in, I tried using the hole in the lid to drink the foam and drink even though I got boba. All I got was cream, but the cream is really good! I’m usually not too much of a foam topping person, but hence, trying new things right? The foam was also a part of the reason I wanted this drink, and it did not disappoint. The initial cream was really thick, so it would probably work better mixed with the drink. It’s sweet with a strong vanilla flavor, and you can see the black specks of vanilla in the cream and the bottom of the drink, so I’m assuming it’s authentic.
The drink itself is, ok? There’s a slight tea flavor, but otherwise it’s not too noticeable and watery. I realize the name didn’t exactly promise a milk tea, but that was the impression I got so it was slightly disappointing (is it actually a milk tea? I may never know). I mixed in the cream, and the flavor and texture balances out, which improves the overall drink. I guess the highlight is the cream though. The boba itself is chewy, with little flavor, but the drink itself was pretty sweet from the cream already so I was fine with that.
Also tried a sip of my family’s drinks. 😉
