Brown Sugar Boba Ice Cream Bar – Xiao Mei (小美)

Another big fad floating around the internet and society lately is boba ice cream! Most places you’ll see brown sugar boba flavor, because that’s the biggest trend in the boba drink world right now and an identifiable flavor. I wouldn’t be surprised if milk tea was another flavor being produced, but I have yet to actually see that.

This one is in a bar form, and if you’ve seen boba ice cream around, chances are it’s probably this brand. I’m not entirely sure why, maybe this brand came up with the idea first, or it’s the most iconic packaging. Regardless, nowadays there are a ton of other brands jumping on the hype train and producing boba ice cream, whether in bars like this one or in regular tubs of ice cream. Maybe those brands are possibly producing milk tea flavor.

If anyone has ever put their boba drink in the fridge to save for later like me, you’ll know from experience that boba doesn’t do well in the cold. It hardens up, and it’s not fun to chew anymore. So how do you make boba ice cream when the cold is boba’s arch nemesis? The answer, is that you don’t put actual boba in it. Shocking! Instead, the “boba” is made from rice flour, the same flour that mochi is made from. Cold mochi still has a chewy texture, and makes a such great substitute for boba that it’s hard to tell I’m not eating boba!

The one I had today was my first one, so I don’t have any other brown sugar boba ice creams to compare it to, but dang was it good! At first sight it looks a little small, but it’s definitely filling (and makes you want more!). My first impression was the strong brown sugar flavor. It was very deep, and almost tasted like a tiramisu, which I thought was interesting. As I kept eating it got better and better, and the “boba” was so accurate and good! It really felt like eating a brown sugar boba drink. Overall, it was so good, and man are these people geniuses. At most places, a box of 4 bars goes for 7.99, which is basically $2 a bar! I would say it’s definitely a special treat, but also on the relatively pricy side for the size. Apparently people are selling a box on eBay for way more which is super mind boggling.

If you want to get some for yourself, head on over to your local Asian grocery store and try the ice cream aisle. These do tend to sell out quickly though! I found this brand at my local 99 Ranch and Zion Market, but I’ve heard H-Mart has them too.

As a side note, I’ll make an update later with pictures of the box and ice cream later. I totally didn’t get lazy or finish my ice cream or anything…
